Ukraine’s PV power to be expanded in 2017
In 2017, 54 new PV power plants with a total capacity of 488 MW are planned in Ukraine.
Ukraine is counting on its expansion of solar power supply in order to reduce its energy dependency on Russia. The capacites of the 54 planned PV installations are in the range of 5 MW, 10 MW and 20 MW.
In 2016, an increase of 107 MW PV capacity was obtained through the construction of 49 projects with a capacity of up to 20 MW, each. At the year end total PV capacity reached a value of 568 WM.
In addition more than 700 small projects (less 100 kW capacity) were implemented in the private sector, and the total capacity of private plants exceeded 8,1 MW. Including the anticipated increase in capacity in 2017, by the end of this year Ukraine could break through 1GW barrier. In addition, more that 700 small projects with a capacity of less than 100 kW were constructed during 2016 in the private sector with a total capacity of 8,1 MW. Given the anticipated capacity increase in 2017, Ukraine might break the 1 GW threshold of PV capacity by the end of this year.
The plan of the Ukrainian government to use Chernobyl’s nuclear wasteland for solar energy generation requires investments of EUR 1,1 for which companies from USA, Canada, China and Germany already have shown interest.
