Eni scraps shale gas developments in Poland

Eni has decided to abandon its three exploration concessions in Poland due to poor exploration results.

In December 2010 the company had reached an agreement for the acquisition of Minsk Energy Resources and thus became operator of 3 licences in the Polish Baltic Basin, a highly prospective shale gas play.
Eni's withdrawal from the Polish shale gas sector follows those of ExxonMobil, Marathon Oil and Talisman Energy; Chevron remains one of the few large companies still exploring for shale gas in the country. Many companies were attracted by shale gas reserve estimates published by the US EIA in 2011 (potential estimated at 5,300 bcm); hopes faded when national estimates scaled down potential reserves to a range of 346 - 768 bcm. This new withdrawal is another blow to Poland's shale gas ambitions.
