EBRD and Romania strengthen renewable energy partnership

The EBRD and Romania’s Ministry of Energy have signed an MoU to advance renewable energy development.

Following Romania’s successful first renewable energy auction, which allocated 1.5 GW, a second auction targeting 3.5 GW is planned by late 2025. The EBRD will support auction design, regulatory reforms, and energy storage solutions, including pumped hydropower, to enhance grid stability. This partnership aligns with Romania’s goal to reach 38.3% renewable energy in gross final consumption by 2030 and 44% low-carbon energy by 2035. The EBRD has already financed nearly 1 GW of renewables in Romania, driving investments of over €1 billion in 2024.
