Poland's PV sector rapid growth amid regulatory challenges

The Institute for Renewable Energy (IEO) reports significant growth in Poland's photovoltaic (PV) sector, with over 6,900 projects registered by Q3 2023, totaling more than 18 GW—a 46% capacity increase compared to early 2023.

Despite this progress, challenges remain as grid operators frequently reject connection requests. In Q2 and Q3 2023, for instance, Enea denied grid access for projects totaling over 6 GW, including large-scale projects above 50 MW. Building permits also lag behind, with only 2.5 GW of permits issued between December 2022 and November 2023. The upcoming renewable energy auctions in November 2023 could further boost the sector, potentially awarding up to 1.4 GW of capacity. While the PV market shows strong momentum, obstacles in grid connections and permitting processes highlight the need for regulatory improvements.
