The Latvian transmission system operator plans to install 80MW/160MWh of BESS
The first battery storage system of 20MW/40MWh will be located in Tume and the other 60MW/120MWh for a substation in Rezekne. The BESS will provide reserves that will be necessary when the Baltic countries synchronise with the continental European grid in 2025 after disconnection from the Russian grid. Similar projects have already been initiated in the other two Baltic countries, Lithuania and Estonia. The costs amount to € 77.07 million, of which 85% is covered by EU funds.
