New EBRD and FAO study highlights bioenergy potential in Turkey and Egypt
The study is an important guide to sustainable energy production from bio-waste. Economic growth and urbanization in Turkey have led to a steady increase in electricity consumption, which is almost entirely covered by imported fossil fuels. To reduce this dependency, the country has set ambitious targets, including increasing the share of renewable energy from 13. 5 percent in 2013 to 20. 5 percent in 2023. In this context, the study reveals that more than 25 million tons of plant residues and 150 million tons of livestock residues could generate more than 1 GW of electricity, which represents 100 percent of the national target for renewable energy from biomass.
