Slovakia’s solar additions reached 220 MW in 2023
According to estimates by the Slovakian Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPI), Slovakia expanded its solar capacity by 220 MW in 2023. It is expected that the country could reach 300 MW of new PV capacity by 2024. Statistics from regional grid operators in Slovakia, show a significant increase in PV capacity compared to the previous year. In 2022, Slovakia installed 60 MW, while in 2021 only 5 MW.
SAPI highlights that the main market drivers in 2023 are a legal framework for supporting PV systems for prosumers, a subsidy program for small residential PV systems and a subsidy program for commercial and municipal PV systems. The Slovakian Innovation and Energy Agency has provided a total budget of 140 million euros (153.3 million US dollars) for 2023, which covers up to 50% of the purchase and installation costs.
However, only a few large systems were connected to the grid last year. The national regulatory authority should revise the grid connection costs charged to producers and make them more consumer-friendly.
