New record for wind power in 2014

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) published its "Global Wind Report" for the year 2014.

Overall, the wind market recovered from its sharp decline in 2013 to just above 35 GW of new installations. Global installations went up further than ever, reaching just over 51 GW of new installations in 2014.

When it comes to offshore wind energy, Europe is still frontrunner. This looks considerably different with the onshore market. At the end of 2014 nearly a third of the world’s total onshore wind power plants were standing in China. With 114 GW of onshore wind power, the country is on track to reach its goal of 200 GW wind power until 2020 – or could reach this milestone a few years early. The report includes a market forecast for 2015 to 2019, in which the authors also expect Asia to be the dominating market over the next few years. The development of wind power in the USA and Canada on the other hand, is much harder to predict. Europe is expected to stay stable, whilst in the markets in India and Latin America a strong growth is expected.
